The 1958 FIFA World Cup was the eleventh FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial international football championship contested by the men's national teams of FIFA. The tournament was held in Switzerland for the first (and to date only) time. In the final it would be Brazil who would become the ninth different winner of the FIFA World Cup after they defeated France 4-1 in the final.

Bids[edit | edit source]

With the format of being Europe and the Americas continuing, it was time for Europe turn and in a strange call of events, there was only one bid despite a proposal from Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom wanting to host the tournament but later dropping their bid. This left only the Swiss as they got the hosting rights unopposed on April 11, 1950.

Qualifying[edit | edit source]

Main article: 1958 FIFA World Cup qualification

The first matches in the qualifying period started in mid-1956 with the first matches being in the opening round of the North American qualification period with Guatemala, El Salvador and Barbados being the teams.

The tournament would see the debut of Canada while Egypt appeared in the World Cup for the first time since 1930.

Seeding[edit | edit source]

For the first time, the tournament seeding was based off the new FIFA World Rankings system which factored in every tournament in an eight-year span instead of 12 like it had been before. For Switzerland they would create history by being the lowest-ranked hosts in World Cup history as they were ranked 68th before the 1958 tournament.
