The 1956–57 European Cup was the first edition of Europe's premier club handball tournament.

For this first edition, the reasons for qualification are not clear because several countries are not represented by their respective champions.

The participating clubs are designated by the national federations which are not necessarily represented by their national champion, either because this national championship is not fully established, or because the champion club did not wish to take part in this competition for various reasons (economic, logistics, availability, etc.).

All the competition takes place in Paris. This is the only time the organization is entrusted to a national federation (French Handball Federation)
