The 1929 Monaco Grand Prix was the first ever Monaco Grand Prix. It was set up by Antony Noghès and was supported by Prince Louis II and local driver Louis Chiron. On April 7, 1929, the plan became a reality when 13 drivers were invited from Europe to race for 75,000 French francs.

For the first three years, there were no qualifying heats, instead of grid positions were drawn by a ballot. Philippe Étancelin drew pole position, while main rival Georges Bouriano started 7th.
